I stopped playing a bit after the first expansion was released, but I felt like trying the game a bit more now as my old favourite class, condi necro, seems to be viable again. I have changed my weapons and ascended armor into Vipers, and am now using my old rabid ascended trinkets, but I want to upgrade them to Viper as well.
Well, to be honest, from that description it sounds like legendary armor is way beyond your reach, unless you plan on becoming an expert in PvP, WvW or raids since legendary armor is only obtainable if you do that content regulary for months. Ascended gear is a good start, but exotics are fine as well (unless you plan to play higher fractals).

This is what I usually do to gear up new builds before I wanna really get into them. I can usually get the trinkets from other characters, or just get them easy ascended from t3 maps. Weapons for the most part the same. Ascended weapons are a 6% stat boost, trinkets a 4% stat boost, and armor a 2% stat boost.
